Casual Friday is the story of hit man John Lago’s very first assignment as a recruit with Human Resources, Inc., a placement agency that sends assassins, disguised as interns, to take out high-level targets under cover of corporate invisibility. John will go on to become the most successful “intern” in HR’s history. You can read more about his career in The Intern’s Handbook, a full-length thriller that will be published on April 8, 2014.

Casual Friday A John Lago Thriller edition by Shane Kuhn Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

This recounting of John Lago's first assignment as a contract assassin is a nice short read (free from Amazon, and still free as of today's writing, 10/27/14) full of some serious deadly humor. It will kill you before you know what hits you. Then it will quickly disappear as though it never existed.

Really, this was a fun short read (along with a copy of the first chapter of The Intern's Handbook, which seems promising in its own right). John Lago, rescued from the streets at the ripe old age of 12, is trained in many disciplines as a young recruit for Human Resources, Inc. This recounts his very first official job. Humorous throughout, it still maintains that undercurrent of deadly seriousness. But it's all about taking out corrupt CEOs, so it can't be all bad, right? Recommended (especially if you like your humor dark).

Death, like life, can't be taken too seriously.

This short story serves well as a prequel to another work by this author . we meet John, an apprentice in a most unusual vocation , hired killer . We join John on his inaugural assassination assignment . What was supposed to be a simple hit turns out to be antyhing but that . How John manages to fulfill his job ( and make love to a movie star ) is an interesting introduction to John's world . Enjoy it
This short book reads as part ad to whet your appetite for The Intern's Handbook - with quite a lot of material from The Intern's Handbook recycled - and part vignette of John Lago's first case. If you are not sure whether or not you want to read/purchase The Intern's Handbook, then feel free to read this as a sampler. If you are already planning to read The Intern's Handbook and aren't sure whether to read this book first, just go with The Intern's Handbook and read this one afterwards as a nice dessert. For the price - free - this slim volume is a great deal!
This short story began well, and it had the promise of something very entertaining. However, it had too much off-color language so I did not finish it. Other readers might enjoy this, though.
I hated the ending though. With a passion.
I was enjoying the flow of the story. John Lago is quite the character, and he introduces the reader to a world we wouldn't otherwise know anything about. I liked how this story was a twisted take on that world. That definitely appealed to me as a reader.
At the end, I think the author was going for dramatic. It didn't work for me though. I said out loud, 'That's it?!'. Then I shook my head a few times. Yup.
I hope The Intern's Handbook picks up where Casual Friday abruptly left off.

3.5/5
If you were a fan of his first book (which I found entertaining at times, frustratingly far-fetched most other times) then you may just enjoy this one as well. I only got halfway through this one though because of how ridiculous and over the top it became. The characters are well written and entertaining, but the situations John got himself in were just too damn much. He interns for a movie production studio and then, within a matter of days, he's not only writing this multi-billion dollar movie but also directing it?? Wow. That's when I just stopped.
Casual Friday is a clever, fast-paced get-to-know-you for author Shane Kuhn and his whip-smart badass protagonist John Lago. It reads like an action thriller filtered through the sarcastic lens of its Millennial hitman main character, a disenfranchised foster system cast-off recruited by the ambiguously just (how awesome is that?) Human Resources, Inc. for his unaffected demeanor as much as his superior intellect and penchant for lethal violence. Lago also happens to be a movie buff - a quality that his first assignment plays directly into, to fantastic satirical effect. The sweetest element in a book full of top-notch story sugar and ingenious touches (the necktie noose on the cover...brilliant!) is Lago's voice; he's a crackling narrator, smart and snarky, full of swagger and dark self-awareness as he simultaneously skewers pop culture tropes and exalts classic film works while sexing and shooting his way through his inaugural kill. A bloody rollick of a running start at the full novel.
This little piece is ok as far as a story-ette is concerned, but after reading The Intern's Handbook by Kuhn, I found Casual Friday to be insufficient. It was over before I started. Rather than using it as a post-Intern prequel, they ought to give it away as a teaser for Intern's Handbook. For $2, it's pretty thin, and while entertaining, it wasn't very satisfying after reading the book. Before the book it could serve as a tasty hors d'oeuvre and would likely boost the book's sales.
